NJ man arrested in NY police cannibalism case

NEW YORK (AP) ? A lawyer for a New York City police officer in a cannibalism case says she thinks a New Jersey man was arrested on related charges to weaken his testimony for the defense at trial this month.

The lawyer, Julia Gatto, spoke outside court after Trenton resident Michael Vanhise (van-HYS') appeared before a magistrate judge in Manhattan. Vanhise, who appeared to wipe tears from his eyes, was held without bail pending a hearing Monday. Gatto says Vanhise's arrest at his home Friday morning appeared to be a tactical move by authorities to prevent testimony about Internet fantasies.

She says Vanhise would have exonerated her client, Gilberto Valle, with his testimony if he took the witness stand. Vanhise's lawyer, Alice Fontier, says she can't comment on the charges against him.

Family Dog Escapes Burning Home ? Fayette Advocate

A family dog escaped a burning home on Thursday and now the family is searching for their lost four-legged friend.

Authorities responded on Thursday to 824 Church Street in Washington Court House shortly after 2:30 p.m. after receiving a 9-1-1 call of a house fully engulfed in flames.

When firefighters arrived on scene, no one was home and they found the rear of the house to be fully ablaze near the garage area.

Mutual aid was requested from other fire departments, including Bloomingburg.

It took firefighters over an hour and a half to get the fire under control.

Once the firefighters were able to gain entry into the structure, and after the family arrived on scene, it was learned that ?Sarge? ? the family?s one-year-old white boxer ? was missing.

It?s believed that Sarge escaped the burning inferno shortly before firefighters arrived on scene.

There?s no word on what may have caused the fire.

Granted, the Garmin Fenix already does decent GPS from your wrist, but there's a limit to what it can accomplish on its basic little LCD. Enter Leikr: a Gorilla Glass beast with a 2-inch, 320 x 240 display that can throw out a wide range of endurance stats simultaneously or switch to a color navigation mode using up to 8GB-worth of onboard OpenStreetMap data. It's designed by former Nokia engineers who claim they've used their mobile skills to make the Leikr catch a quicker GPS signal, connect directly to a cloud-based, Endomondo-integrated exercise portal using WiFi and Linux-based software, and at the same time stick to a smartphone-like 10mm thickness.

The project's Kickstarter page has just gone live, with early bird deals still available -- at the time of writing, a minimum $229 buy-in is required to lock down a final production Leikr by the summer. That's hardly cheap, but it's not at $400 Fenix proportions either, so take a look at the video after the break and the funding link below (scroll to the bottom of that page for full specs) and then, you know, dwell on it.

3 bright spots in the US job market for 2013 - Fortune Finance ...

FORTUNE --?For the past five years, joblessness has perhaps been the biggest thorn on the U.S. economy. The unemployment rate peaked at 10% in late 2009. Since then, it has only fallen to 7.7% as of November, suggesting the long slog is likely to continue into the New Year.

For 2013, economists widely agree the outlook for jobs will continue improving but not by much. The economy is expected to create 2.36 million jobs, slightly more than the estimated 1.9 million that's estimated for 2012, according to IHS Global Insight.

Older workers, particularly those who've been out of work for more than six months, have been disproportionately impacted. So have young workers struggling to launch their careers. And countless other groups are feeling the weight of an economy peeling off from a financial crisis and housing market meltdown.

Amid another blah year, a few workers that bore the brunt of the Great Recession stand to gain in 2013. Here are three:

College graduates

Congrats class of 2013! You have a better chance landing your dream job than the poor grads before you working as baristas.

The years following the Great Recession hit workers across the board, but those stepping out of college campuses in 2012 were hit particularly hard. They graduated at a time when half of all recent grads were either jobless or working low-waged jobs, according to an April analysis by the Associated Press.

The job market isn't expected to be quite as harsh for young people next year, economists say. Employers anticipate hiring 13% more Class of 2013 college graduates than they hired from the Class of 2012, according to a survey of employers conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers.

The top five bachelor's degree in demand? Finance, followed by computer and information science, accounting, business administration/management and mechanical engineering.

Construction workers

As the housing market continues to heal in 2013, expect more hiring in construction. Since the Great Recession technically ended in June 2009, jobs in homebuilding dropped 14.5% from 633,000 to 552,800 in November, according to the Labor Department.

In 2012 alone, the construction industry lost 9,000 jobs. That's expected to reverse come 2013, when the economy will likely add 100,000 jobs in homebuilding and other construction work, says Marisa Di Natale, economist at Moody's Analytics. The most dramatic pick-up is expected in 2014, with 300,000 more jobs.

Government workers

For the past three years, local and state governments held off on new hires and shed jobs almost every month. Officials struggled with plummeting tax revenues linked closely to property values.

But after years of virtually no hiring and as the housing market recovers, governments are expected to hire again, Natale says. For 2013, state governments, in particular, are expected to add 70,000 jobs.
