These mobile apps for the election all win in a landslide

In addition to determining the leader of the free world, presidential elections showcase the profound advances media and technology can make over a four year period of time. In the 2008 election, mobile apps were just becoming part of the pop-cultural landscape and Netbooks (rather than iPads) were expected to take over the laptop computer market.

Today there are nearly one million apps, many of which can inform your choices on election day and keep you in the know when the returns come in the evening on the 6th of November. Here are five election-oriented apps worthy of your vote.

IntoNow (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Android) Free

During the three presidential debates, approximately one-third of viewers under the age of 40 were using multiple screens to follow and react to the give-and-take presented on their television sets. Twitter and Facebook, which can be accessed via computers, smartphones, and tablets, enable anyone to share their thoughts with friends and followers. Apps like IntoNow, which is owned by Yahoo!, go one step further as an election night companion. The app automatically identifies and syncs to whatever program you are watching on television, allowing you to rate and interact with others over what you see on the screen. The IntoNow elections dashboard lets you do things like predict who will win, rate and vet political commercials, and indicate whether you think a pundit or candidate?s statement is true. The app also can grab screenshots of what you watch on TV, and you can post comments with friends and followers. For better and worse, it might be the best way to be heard this election season.

PollTracker (iPhone, iPod touch) Free

While Mitt Romney seems to have an edge in the popular vote, President Obama appears to be holding a slim lead in the Electoral College. The polls, of course, can change by the minute. Developed by Talking Points Memo, PollTracker provides a breakdown of national and state-by-state polling for the presidential and key congressional races. The app lets users segment data by demographics and voting blocks, and provides history information and analysis of the candidates.

No matter what side of the political aisle you hail, the one thing we can all agree on is there are too many political commercials. Independent groups not directly involved with the campaigns fund many of the commercials appearing this year. Super PAC App uses Shazam-like voice recognition technology to identify what commercial you are watching at any point in time. From there, the app will provide information about the political action committee behind the campaign, and vet whether the commercial?s claims are true.

Congress+ (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad) $4.99

Learn the biography, voting record, financiers, and legislative activity of every member of the Senate or House of Representatives. Also access contact information for all members and staff, as well as a directory of their social media presence including Facebook pages, Twitter handles and YouTube Channels. This is one app that allows you to carry your congressperson in your back pocket.

This app developed in part by The Poynter Institute determines the accuracy of statements made by candidates, notable surrogates and officials, and political commercials. Statements are labeled ?True,? ?Kind of True,? ?False,? ?Pants on Fire.? This gamified version of the original Settle It! app ?quizzes users on recent statements and determines if they are ?interns? or ?wonks.? It is a great app to have in a pinch to settle a cocktail party debate or family dinner conversation.

How and why herpes viruses reactivate to cause disease

ScienceDaily (Oct. 31, 2012) ? The mere mention of the word "herpes" usually conjures negative images and stereotypes, but most people have been infected with some form of the virus. For most, a sore appears, heals and is forgotten, although the virus remains latent just waiting for the right circumstances to come back. Now, the mystery behind what triggers the virus to become active again is closer to being solved thanks to new research published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology's November 2012 issue.

In the report, scientists show how the immune system may lose its control over the virus when facing new microbial threats, such as when it must fend off other viral invaders or bacteria.

"Because almost all people are infected by one or more herpes family viruses during their lifetime, the potential impact of these findings are significant," said Charles H. Cook, M.D., FACS, FCCM, director of surgical critical care at The Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio, and a researcher involved in the work. "We hope that by understanding how these latent viral infections are controlled that we can prevent reactivation events and improve people's lives."

To make this discovery, researchers studied mice with latent herpes family cytomegalovirus (CMV) during severe bacterial infections. They found that T-cells responsible for CMV control were reduced significantly during a new infection with bacteria. This, in effect, reduced the "brakes" which kept the virus under control, allowing the virus to reactivate and cause disease. When the immune system eventually sensed the reactivation, the memory T-cell levels returned to normal, effectively restoring the body's control over the virus.

"Finding ways to control herpes flare ups is important, not only for the health of the person with the virus, but also for preventing its transmission," said John Wherry, Ph.D., Deputy Editor of the Journal of Leukocyte Biology. "This report highlights the important interplay when we are 'co-infected' with more than one microbe and provides important insights into why the immune system sometimes fails as well as how it can regain control of latent herpes virus infections."

10 Pet Safety Tips For Hurricane Sandy | Babble Pets

PetSafetyTipsHurricaneSandyiStock 000020557456XSmall1 226x300 10 Pet Safety Tips For Hurricane Sandy

Pets need protection from Hurricane Sandy just as we do: follow these pet safety tips.

We can?t stress the advice from the ASPCA more: ?If you are not safe, neither is your pet.?

While those of us on the East coast are preparing for a monster of a storm with the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, we must remember that our pets need to be included in our safety and evacuation plans.

Here are 10 must-read tips:

Take your pets in and keep them inside. While there is no reason that a pet should live outside, at the first sign of an imminent storm, pets need to be secured inside the house ASAP. A doghouse will NOT provide any protection. If you can?t be outside neither can your pet!

Do NOT leave your pets behind ever. If the situation calls for you to evacuate your home there, your pet is not safe there either. Do not rely on thinking animal instinct will protect them.

Call ahead to shelters. If you must escape and go to a shelter, remember that not every Red Cross shelter accepts animals. The time to search for shelters that accept pets is now- before you must leave. Local vets and shelters might know about nearby shelters that accept pets. You can also call nearby hotels and motels who may allowed pets. Please note that if you live in NYC, pets are welcome at all NYC Hurricane Sandy evacuation centers. Please do NOT leave your pets behind!

Lean on friends and family. Friends and relatives who are outside your immediate area might be willing to take in your pet(s). Ask early on when first making your emergency plans.

Create an emergency supply and travel kit.As you pack you ?Go Bag?, make one for your pet with all the necessary items they might need over a period of days.?Click here to see exactly what items should be in it.

Select a designated temporary caregiver. No one wants to think about this but there is always a chance that you might not be able to go back to your home for a while. By predetermining a person who will take your pet in for a lengthy period of time, it not only provides protection for your beloved pet, but also gives you peace of mind that you pet will be taken care of properly.

Secure proper identification for your pet. The ASPCA specifically advises the following: ?Make sure all pets wear collars and tags with up-to-date identification. Your pet?s ID tag should contain his name, telephone number, and any urgent medical needs. Be sure to write your pet?s name, your name and contact information on your pet?s carrier.?

Visually sum up your house and predetermine the safest points in your home. Locate the rooms that are highest if flooding is an issue. Make sure the room is window free and possible flying debris. Your best bet is to choose ?easy-to-clean areas such as utility rooms, bathrooms, and basements as safe zones.?

Provide for sufficient and long-term water for your pet. Just like people, pets will need extra water in case of a prolonged power outage, so fill up bathtubs and sinks with water.

After the storm, do not let pets outside right away. Yes, they will have to relieve themselves after being holed up for hours on end, but check your yard and street for downed power wires, which may electrocute them. Do not let your pets out on their own: dogs should be on a leash and cats need to stay inside. The chances of outside hazards are too great in the days following a hurricane.

Fancy Pigeons of Egypt Photography

My idea was to photograph something so unusual, yet so familiar that it makes us stop, think,

and enjoy the beauty and humanity in these animals. The pigeons represent a stereotype

in the Western world, but these birds are also a novel piece of culture from the Middle East.

Obama balancing storm response with campaigning

WASHINGTON (AP) ? President Barack Obama has spent months trying to balance his re-election bid with running the government.

Now, just when his campaign needs him the most, with little more than a week before the election, his official job is beckoning.

Republican challenger Mitt Romney, too, faces questions about how to conduct his campaign as a superstorm charges toward the East Coast. But as president, it's Obama who oversees the federal government's preparations for the looming storm and it's Obama who will bear the responsibility for any missteps.

With that in mind, Obama scrapped campaign events Monday night and Tuesday morning. He planned to return to the White House late Monday to monitor the storm and the government's response.

(1)? Two of the many instances of hysteria about Hurricane Sandy

(a) AP, 27 October 2012 (for comparison, see section 4 for details about the 1893 hurricane that hit NYC):

?New York City began precautions for an ominous but still uncertain forecast. ? Jeff Masters, meteorology director of the forecasting service Weather Underground, said this could be as big, perhaps bigger, than the worst East Coast storm on record, a 1938 New England hurricane that is sometimes known as the Long Island Express, which killed nearly 800 people.

(b) ?Northeast in crosshairs of possible ?superstorm? Sandy?, CNN, 27 October 2012 ? My favorite Sandy-hysteria (we don?t have East coast storm data for 500 years, back to Columbus):

Computer models predict Delaware, Maryland and Virginia could see up to a foot of rain, according to the CNN Weather Unit. Isolated spots could see the worst rains in 500 years.

? Sandy presents a scenario not unlike the one that led to 1991?s ?Perfect Storm,? when moisture flung north by Hurricane Grace combined with a high pressure system and a cold front to produce a tempest in the north Atlantic over Halloween. But Grace never made landfall.

(2)? The problem with hurricanes is us

.

Sandy could have severe effects, as described by the forecasts of the National Weather Service?s Public Advisory and forecast of their Hydrometeorological Prediction Center.

Some sound news: ?5 reasons why Sandy is expected to be a superstorm?, AP, 27 October 2012:

  1. Northbound hurricane
  2. Early winter storm
  3. Arctic air from the North
  4. High tides could worsen flooding
  5. Combo of snow, wind increases risk for widespread power outages

None of these factors is ?historic? or even unusual by themselves (see this WaPo article for more technical details).? The combination is unusual, but certain to happen repeatedly over time.

The AP ? and most news stories about Sandy ? do not mention the key factor that might cause large property losses: during the past 0 years we?ve built massive urban complexes with inadequate attention to normal weather effects.? Some of this development is mad ? such as construction in floodplains and barrier islands (much of which occurs only due to the subsidies of the Federal Flood Insurance program and disaster relief programs).? New Orleans ? near the ocean, in a major storm area, and below sea level.

The result is increasing property damage and disruption of vital infrastructure ? although less loss of life, as our infrastructure improves in quality and resilience.

The news media reflect the structure of our society.? Their biases combine to happy commercial effect:? chronic disasterphilia, love of the ?extreme climate? narrative, and reluctance to blame our corporate rulers.

The missing words from almost every news story: ?this during this current period of record low global hurricane activity?.? See the next section for details.

(3)? Are hurricanes becoming more frequent, more extreme?

We?re in a period of low activity, although you?d not learn that from the US news media.

(a) ?Recent historically low global tropical cyclone activity?, Ryan N. Maue, Geophysical Research Letters, 20 July 2011 ? Conclusion (references omitted; red emphasis added):

It is still a fundamental research question as to what are the atmosphere and ocean mechanisms responsible for the observed annual global TC frequency of ?87 storms. With the upcoming IPCC AR5 assessment and associated CMIP5 climate simulations, it is critical to have the best possible diagnosis of periods of global TC inactivity and incorporate the recent pentad of historical lows into the context of natural and anthropogenically forced climate variability. Furthermore, research must better explain the role of tropical cyclones in the climate system especially during this current period of record inactivity.

Global tropical cyclone Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE units 104 knots2), annual totals from 1970?2011.

Global tropical cyclone frequency, monthly from 1970?2011: 12?month running sums including all TCs (top time series), and only hurricane force TCs (bottom time series).

(b)? ?Historical global tropical cyclone landfalls?, Jessica Weinkle, Ryan Maue and Roger Pielke Jr, Journal of Climate, in press ? Conclusion (references omitted):

From currently available historical tropical cyclone (TC) records, we constructed a long-period global hurricane landfall dataset using a consistent methodology. We have identified considerable interannual variability in the frequency of global hurricane landfalls, but within the resolution of the available data, our evidence does not support the presence of significant long-period global or individual basin linear trends for minor, major, or total hurricanes within the period(s) covered by the available quality data. Therefore, our long-period analysis does not support claims that increasing TC landfall frequency or landfall intensity has contributed to concomitantly increasing economic losses. Due to documented multidecadal variations in TC frequency and intensity on global and basin scales, our findings strongly support the usage of long-period historical landfall datasets for trend analysis.

While there is continued uncertainty surrounding future changes in climate, current projections of TC frequency or intensity change may not yield an anthropogenic signal in economic loss data for many decades or even centuries. Thus, our quantitative analysis of global hurricane landfalls is consistent with previous research focused on normalized losses associated with hurricanes that have found no trends once data is properly adjusted for societal factors.

(4)? What if Sandy hits NYC, plus more info about hurricanes

Despite the hysteria about Sandy being ?the worst?, there have been many horrific hurricanes in US history.? Fortunately most when our population density was lower, our cities far smaller.

(a)? Sandy might resemble Hurricane Hazel of 1954. See the NWS history page; and their detailed description here. Hat tip on this to Brad Johnson at WUWT.

(b)? Sandy might hit New York City. Its history shows us what to look forward to ?

The short, light version:? ?16 Unsettling Facts About New York City And Hurricanes?, BuzzFeed, 25 October 2012

The details are in this excerpt from ?Storm Tracker?, New York Magazine, 4 September 2005 ? ?A history of hurricanes in New York ? including the day in 1893 that Hog Island disappeared for good.?

But our own hurricane history is more tumultuous than many New Yorkers might think. In 1821, when a major hurricane made a direct hit on Manhattan, stunned residents recorded sea levels rising as fast as thirteen feet in a single hour down where there?s now Battery Park City. Everything was flooded south of Canal Street. The storm struck at low tide, though, and, according to Queens College professor Nicholas Coch, a coastal geologist who calls himself a ?forensic hurricanologist,? that?s ?the only thing that saved the city.?

Then there?s Hog Island. The pig-shaped mile-long barrier island was off the southern coast of the Rockaways. After the Civil War, developers built saloons and bathhouses on it, and Hog Island became a Gilded Age version of the Hamptons. The city?s political bosses and business elite used the place as a kind of beachy annex of Tammany Hall. That all ended on the night of August 23, 1893, when a terrifying Category 2 hurricane made landfall on the swamp that is now JFK airport.

The hurricane was a major event. All six front-page columns of the August 25, 1893, New York Times were dedicated to the ?unexampled fury? of the ?West Indian monster.? The storm sunk dozens of boats and killed scores of sailors. In Central Park, hundreds of trees were uprooted, ? a 30-foot storm surge swept across southern Brooklyn and Queens, destroying virtually every man-made structure in its path.

As for Hog Island, ?it largely disappeared that night,? Coch says. ?As far as I know, it is the only incidence of the removal of an entire island by a hurricane.?

Statistically, the New York area is hit by one of these monster storms every 75 years or so; ?it?s just a matter of time,? says Lee. After Hog Island, the next big one came a little ahead of schedule, the ?Long Island Express? of 1938, with 183-mile-per-hour winds. At the time, Long Island wasn?t a densely populated suburban sprawl. The same hurricane today would cause incredible havoc. Hurricane Carol, a Category 3 storm that hit eastern Long Island and came ashore in Connecticut in 1954, mostly missed the city (even as it inundated downtown Providence, Rhode Island, under twelve feet of water).

Were another Long Island Express to barrel in, AIR Worldwide Corporation, an insurance-industry analyst, estimates $11.6 billion in New York losses alone. On AIR?s list of ?the top ten worst places for an extreme hurricane to strike,? New York City is No. 2, behind only Miami. New Orleans is ranked fifth.

janwahlhats 03 Jan Wahl Movie Review: The Sessions & Cloud AtlasCLOUD ATLAS (R)

Fasten your seatbelts for an epic film that travels over 500 years. Based on the novel by David Mitchell, this wild ride unfolds in multiple timelines. There?s drama, mystery, high action and romance. What makes this all work are the actors who play many roles, especially Tom Hanks. He?s given support by Halle Barry and Hugh Grant.

This film is a study in the craft of acting, as well as excellent movie makeup. The same filmmakers gave us the Matrix trilogy, so the effects and visuals are imaginative. The movie is worth seeing, especially on the big screen where it belongs. There should be an Oscar for the makeup and at least some nominations for set design and Tom Hanks.

So many movies exploit sexuality or make it offensive, funny or even gross. Here is a film that makes it important to the human condition as well as touching and unforgettable.

Based on the surprisingly optimistic writing of Bay Area journalist and poet Mark O?Brien, we meet a man who has lived most of his life in an iron lung. At age 38 he is determined to experience sexuality. With the help of a sex therapist (Helen Hunt) and a priest (William H. Macy), O?Brien (John Hawkes) sets out to make this dream a reality. Hawkes is loveable and witty as O?Brien, Macy as usual excellent as he plays comedy for truth. But, it is Hunt who provides us with the dignity and honesty in this true story. Everyone involved in this movie, including writer/director Ben Lewin, deserves Oscar gold.

How To: Tell Someone You're Secretly In Love With Them | xoJane

There's an amazing Counting Crows song that you might know, in which the Adam Duritz makes a poignant complaint: Don't it always seem to go/that you don't know what you got til it's gone?

I think about that lyric a lot, usually when I'm in the store wishing that Lean Cuisine still made a pesto French bread pizza, or when I see somebody who I had once had feelings for and never said anything.

More and more of our exes are marrying, having kids, getting cool jobs in Tokyo or disappearing after figuring out how to make six figures WHILE working from home. Many of us seem to have a lot of regrets about giving up a shot at happiness. Many of us also have trouble expressing our feelings without the benefit of some kind of global doomsday situation in which we know we have but days to live, and are also mega drunk and close to our goal weights.

I've had the experience of not being able to tell someone I cared before it was "too late." Too often, I wait until somebody is completely unavailable before I let him know how I really feel. A lot of times I don't even LIKE him until I realize I can't have him. Ha ha, how weird is that? Super weird.

Whether it's a friend you wish was more, or an ex you can't forget, or that guy who's on "GRIMM" who you've never met but think is kind of dreamy, you may have had this very problem.

So, as a relationship expert and Executive Vice President of Huge Pussy Industries, I figured I'd come up with a few ways for us to get that special someone to see you as more than a friend, or an insane, crazed "GRIMM" fan.

You know, without actually being forthright. What are we, in middle school?

1) Start out by doing little things that demonstrate an exceptional depth of feeling, like remembering a bit of trivia like his favorite book or film. Bring it up when you guys are hanging out, you know, if an opportunity to do so comes up.

2) Consider going out with somebody who looks eerily similar. If your friends remark uncomfortably on the uncanny resemblance, try to make sure he is within earshot. If not, try to get them to repeat themselves, when he is in earshot.

3) Buy him a copy of "Remains of the Day." DON'T give it to him! Don't be insane. Just buy a copy of "Remains of the Day" and hope for the best. I think this has something to do with the Law of Attraction.

4) Wait until it's his birthday and make a really nice, elaborate cake. Serve the cake to some of your friends with strong entrepreneurial skills and business contacts. Go into the cake business and sell at the zenith of its profitability. Give the proceeds to his favorite charity in his name, courtesy of "an anonymous donor who is sweet on him."

5) Compose a song for him in which you list all of his good qualities. But to avoid being taken TOO SERIOUSLY, intersperse old timey compliments and infantilized Vaudeville nonsense slang, like, "You're the skin on my cream-based soup," or, "You're the wiggle jiggle in my chicken aspic."

6) Find out if he likes anybody and help him get a date with her. Chauffeur the two of them around on the date while dressed as some kind of lesbian soldier. He'll probably give her some jewelry or something but don't worry, he is definitely going to realize that whoa, he likes you.

7) Are you O-negative by any chance? That's the universal donor, you know.

8) Make a website that strongly infers that someone who might be you likes him. Use white-hat search engine optimization to direct him to that website should he Google himself.

9) Have you considered a cryptic Facebook status or tweet? What about a link to a sonnet? I like 106. What's your favorite?

10) Remember Carl Tanzler, that crazy German doctor who kidnapped the dead body of his unrequited love object and covered it in papier mache and lived with it for years and years until they took it away from him? I don't know why I'm bringing that up, but in general, yes, I think developing a hobby is a great way to get somebody to notice you.

11) Find out what his favorite food is. Hit up a bookstore and find a cookbook that shows you how to make it at home. Do still more research on the food until you are able to write a beautiful, microinformative Susan-Orlean-style book of literary journalism on the food. Guess who wants to come to your book party?

12) Go to the website of Dentyne International. Send customer service an email asking why it is now so difficult to find their product, Dentyne FIRE, in stores. They will probably write something back about how production of the gum has been temporarily discontinued due to lack of customer demand. Write back that this is insane, and that you love sugar-free cinnamon gum even if everybody else is too blind to. Screenshot the whole thing and email it to him with the subject line: "Metaphor."

13) If you're going to drink a whole jug of wine, don't watch that movie about Keats dying. (This in no way helps you tell somebody you have feelings for him. It's just solid advice.)

14) Date somebody famous, like Prince. Who's interested in whom now?

15) You know, not ALL witchcraft involves using dark forces to deprive others of their free will for your own purposes. Visit your local new age shop and ask the proprietress about white magyck. While you're there, pick up one of those pewter statues of a dragon dressed as a wizard, curled around a prism. Guys love those.

16) Become exceedingly wealthy and throw a couple of ragers. If things go south, you can always die in a pool.

17) Twenty-five years from now, bury a throwaway line about your feelings in your memoir and hope that he is too ravaged by age to reject you. Who cares though? You look great now and yes, these are real pearls.

18) Die first. Leave one of those elaborate treasure map wills. Hidden deep within the cave on the tropical island is a cryptex. On the scroll is writing in a dying language that becomes visible when sprayed with lemon juice and held up to the sun. "I liked you," says the Navajo wind talker he's hired as a translator, using the money from your grand estate. "I really liked you."

Networks, AP changing exit poll strategy

NEW YORK (AP) ? A growth in early voting and tough economy for the media are forcing changes to the exit poll system that television networks and The Associated Press depend upon to deliver the story on Election Night, all with the pressure-filled backdrop of a tight presidential race.

The consortium formed by ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News Channel, NBC and the AP is cutting back this year on in-person exit polls while upping the amount of telephone polling. This is to take into account more people voting before Nov. 6 and households that have abandoned land lines in favor of cell phones.

"It makes it trickier," said Joe Lenski, executive vice president of Edison Research, the company that oversees the election operation for the news organizations. "It means there are a lot of different pieces to keep track of."

On a perfect Election Night, Americans who are tracking results won't notice all the work being done behind the scenes. The Associated Press reports actual vote counts nationwide and news organizations use those numbers, plus the exit polls, results from precinct samples in some states and telephone polls of absentee voters to do their own race calls.

But things haven't always gone perfectly. The news organizations completely rebuilt their exit poll system after the 2000 embarrassment, when TV networks mistakenly called the race for George W. Bush when it wasn't decided until a month later (the AP mistakenly called Florida for Bush, retracted it but, unlike the networks, never called the overall race for Bush). In 2004, early exit poll results overestimated the strength of Democrat John Kerry.

To save money this year, the consortium is doing bare bones exit polling in 19 states. Enough voters will be questioned in those states to help predict the outcome of races, but not enough to draw narrative conclusions about the vote ? what issues mattered most to women voting for Mitt Romney, for instance, or how many Catholics voted for Barack Obama.

The affected states are: Alaska, Arkansas, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and Wyoming, along with the District of Columbia.

Each is considered a non-battleground state with polls showing a strong advantage for one of the presidential candidates. Some non-battleground states will get the full exit poll for other reasons, like Massachusetts and its hotly contested U.S. Senate race between Scott Brown and Elizabeth Warren.

"What we are doing is taking our resources and using them where the stories are," said Sheldon Gawiser, NBC's elections director and head of the steering committee for the AP-network consortium.

Spending figures were not made available. News organizations have had a tough few years financially, but the consortium noted that it is interviewing a total of 25,000 voters this year, up from 18,000 in 2008.

Because of early voting, there are no traditional exit polls in Oregon, Washington and Colorado. A phone poll is done prior to Election Day in those states, taking in a mixture of people who have and haven't voted. Others states have a mixture of telephone polling and exit interviews. California, North Carolina and Arizona are among the states where the percentage of telephone polls has grown because of more people voting early.

More people are interviewed on cell phones because it is the primary way to contact them. The consortium said cell phone interviews are twice as expensive as those on land lines because of manpower costs, in large part because it is harder to reach people and federal law requires the phone numbers to be manually dialed instead of done by computers.

In addition to the exit poll changes, the news organizations are taking steps to improve their ability to include actual vote counts in their decisions on when to call particular states as a winner for either candidate. This usually involves collecting sample precincts that reflect a state's demographics.

Even this is complicated by local customs. Some states report precinct results more quickly than others. New Mexico, for example, sets up polling places where anybody from a particular county can cast a ballot; while this makes voting easier, it makes projections based on precinct samples more difficult.

Television viewers may notice that networks are being slower than in the past to project winners in certain states, but the consortium believes people won't see a difference.

If the actual election is as close as the pre-election polls are suggesting, it will be a long night, anyway.

With all the factors increasing the difficulties and costs associated with exit polling, it's worth wondering whether a time will come that the news organizations abandon them in favor of the pre-election polling. The experts say that time is nowhere near.

"One of the great advantage of exit polls is you don't have to worry about who voted. You don't have all of these 'likely voter' issues that you have now," said Lee Miringoff, a pollster at Marist College.

Gawiser noted how the minds of voters can change, even up until the last possible minute.

"It's a story we want to be able to tell on Election Night and we want to be able to tell it accurately and rapidly," he said. "I really don't think it's much different than any other story we tell."

Android based tablets make huge gains in market share says Strategy Analytics

Nexus 7

According to the folks at Strategy Analytics, market share for Android based tablets has risen to 41-percent of the total, or just shy of 25 million units. This growth means that double the number of Android-based tablets were sold compared to the same time last year, and market share has risen by 12-percent. This growth comes completely at the expense of iOS, whose market share has dropped from 65-pecent of the market to 56-percent. Tablets are clearly a two-horse race, at least for now.

But (there's always a but) a huge number of these tablets sold were from Amazon -- a fact overlooked by most analysts when determining these sort of numbers. In the tablet space, Amazon is a competitor to Google, not a vendor. Of course it's not surprising to see market share be divided up between the two three tablet giants, and fierce competition can only lead to better products.

In the end, I don't care how many tablets any company sells. I only care that the one I'm buying (or have bought) is the best it can be.
