Musketier
Durable multiple graded stakes winner Musketier has been retired from racing to stand in 2013 at Frank Stronach's Adena Springs Canada near Aurora, Ontario. A fee will be announced later.
German-bred Musketier broke his maiden at 2 in a six-length score at Deauville, and was a group III winner by that same margin two months later at Longchamp. He was a fixture on the French racing circuit over the next three seasons before arriving in 2007 in North America, where he won six graded events.
Musketier won consecutive runnings of the Elkhorn Stakes (gr. IIT) at Keeneland, defeating grade I winner Brass Hat in 2010 when the race was sponsored by Fifth Third and subsequent grade I winner Pool Play in 2011.
Musketier held his form well into his 10-year-old season, winning the Singspiel Stakes (Can-IIIT) at Woodbine for the third time in four years. In 2011 he was Canada's champion grass male. He finished his career with a record of 11-7-6 from 50 starts and $1,130,027 in earnings.
"He was a true competitor. Few horses over the years have been as tough and sound as Musketier," said his Hall of Fame trainer Roger Attfield. "He was a pleasure to train and as consistent as they come."
Musketier is a son of prominent German stallion Acatenango, best known to North American racing fans as the broodmare sire of 2011 Kentucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) winner Animal Kingdom. He is out of Myth and Reality, by Linamix, the maternal grandsire of 58 stakes winners and 12 grade/group I winners.
"Musketier is just the kind of stallion that's needed in North America," said Stronach's son, Andy Stronach. "He's not only a complete outcross to Raise a Native, Northern Dancer, and Bold Ruler, but he has to be one of the soundest horses to run in North America this decade."
